SLT's Annual Meeting September 18th Marion Music Hall An Evening with Peter Stone
In addition to speaking, Peter will feature some amazing works of art and be signing his new book, The Untouchable Tree.

The Untouchable Tree is about our connection to the magnificence, the transcendence, and the essential nature of trees. Throughout human history, they have served as shelter and as symbol. And today, more than ever, our destiny is tied to theirs.
In this book you'll find discussion of our exploitation of trees for material gain and declarations of our age-old love for woodlands, parks, and forests; reflections on a tree's life cycle; and the historical origins of various species. Sometimes soothing, sometimes haunting, his words and art reveal the many sides of trees with a vibrancy sure to leave a powerful impression long after the book is closed.
The Untouchable Tree is 192 pages and is illustrated with 30 color paintings. It will retail for $29.95, but will be available for a limited time to SLT supporters for $20.00. Please support both SLT and one of our local artists. For more information on Peter's work, visit Peter Stone Studios.

238 ACRES CONSERVED IN THE AUCOOT COVE WATERSHED! SLT wishes to thank Dennis Mahoney & Sons for the donation of a 238 acre Conservation Restriction on the Marion / Mattapoisett town line. This CR will protect habitat for four toed salamanders and eastern box turtles; both species are currently protected under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act.
SLT hopes to continue our conservation efforts in this fragile watershed.
KENNEY'S LANDING SLT continues to work with the Town of Marion on a Conservation Restriction on two lots at the end of Ichabod Lane abutting our Ladner's Landing property. This acquisition will provide access to the Sippican River for kayaks and canoes. When this project is complete we intend to official rename the preserve, including Ladner's Lander's Landing property Kenney's Landing in honor of Hod Kenney!
TERRAPINS IN SIPPICAN HARBOR Tabor Academy, the New Bedford Oceanarium, Mass Audubon, Llyod Center, the Buttonwood Park Zoo and other regional environmental groups engaged negaged in a joint research project to assess the status of diamondback terrapins in estuaries from Wareham to Fall River this coming summer. These non-migratory marine turtles are a key bellwether species within our fragile coastal ecosystem. Recent preliminary data suggest that terrapins in Sippican Harbor may be on the verge of extirpation. How Can You Help: You can support this project and help save these animals from extinction. When you are out walking on SLT lands and you see a terrapin please call the 24/7 hotline at (508) 274-5108 with sightings, especially during the nesting season from early June to late July as female terrapins come up on the shoreline to lay eggs. Other turtle calls are welcomed too, as they will get a sense of the diversity of populations and species within the South Coast region. Check out the poster [Adobe PDF-64KB].
A recent report by Congress's Joint Committee on Taxation recommends dismantling tax deductions for landowners who volunteer to conserve their land - a program that has been essential to private and public conservation efforts. For more information on this issue please visit the Land Trust Alliance's website.
VOLUNTEERS WANTED The Sippican Lands Trust welcomes volunteers and can use help both in the office for event coordination, filing, etc., as well as help on land in terms of Stewardship.
