Stewardship

The Sippican Lands Trust has an active Stewardship Program of volunteers, including locals students, who monitor, maintain, photograph and report on Trust wildlife refuges on a seasonal basis. Stewards work to oversee the maintenance of natural processes for preserving native ecosystems and to support species that are native to the area, and their surveys enable us to monitor general conditions as well as identify any situations that require attention.

According to the Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices, "the land trust marks its boundaries and regularly monitors its properties for potential management problems (such as trespass, misuse or overuse, vandalism or safety hazards) and takes action to recify such problems."

On October 18th, SLT had a trail cleanup day at our Gallison Woods Preserve.  Below are several pictures from that event.  If you are interested in helping with trail clean up, please call the office at 508.748.3080 and volunteer - we'd love your help!

According to Stephanie Levine of Planet Steward:

“A wildlife sanctuary is a state of mind, an attitude, protecting more than just the acreage it encompasses, exposing all to an alternative relationship with the land. A Steward according to twentieth-century Webster is a ward or keeper entrusted with the management of the estate of another.”

Please feel free to contact the Head Steward Bill Saltonstall
